Joleen R. Fernald, PhD, CCC-SLP, BCS-CL is a speech language pathologist with expertise in the assessment and treatment of selective mutism (SM). She has worked for more than 20 years in schools and pediatric outpatient clinics and is the owner of a private practice which was the first multidisciplinary assessment and treatment center solely focused on SM. Selective mutism is a complex anxiety disorder that leaves an individual unable to speak or communicate effectively in certain – or select – settings. What is important to remember is that the individual is not purposefully withholding speech. For example, a child may be able to speak with family at home but not with peers at school. Selective mutism is linked to anxiety and may be related to social phobia.

An individual's pattern of mutism can vary greatly. Some children or adults never talk outside the home, some whisper, and some speak with only a select few people.
